More than 20 Million people and thousands of local schools and communities participated in the first Earth Day which took place on April 22, 1970.

Celebrated in over 192 countries each year, it is one of the most widely acknowledged environmental events across the globe dedicated to increasing awareness about the Earth. Today, more than 1 Billion people participate in Earth Day.

Radio stations across the nation are playing a role, gathering communities for common causes and helping spread the word. It’s fascinating to see the variety of topics that are covered: Trail creation and maintenance, clean water, community clean ups and restoration projects, gardening plant education, alternative energy and endangered species awareness.

Other common Earth Day activities include planting trees, cleaning up litter, or simply enjoying nature through hiking, gardening, or taking a stroll in a local park.

“Take clean water, for example,” Wheeler said. “One of the events that sparked the first Earth Day was that the Cuyahoga River was so polluted that it caught fire [and] today, the water in Flint is unsafe to drink. While our battle lines have changed, the larger fights remain the same, clean air and water, healthy ecosystems, and safe food.” ~ The Environmental Protection Information Center’s executive director Tom Wheeler.

Here’s just a few events (there are literally thousands and it seems almost every city has some opportunity to volunteer or celebrate with a festival).
