One of the things we’ve found about being in a rural, remote location with service limitations is that there is a lot of interest in “off the grid” living. Sometimes this is by choice for sustainability or a desire to be independent of public resources, other times, it’s out of necessity due to financial or physical constraints.
C. Crane has always promoted alternative energy especially when it saves money. We currently work with Six Rivers Solar, here in Humboldt County, where they use some of our WiFi equipment such as our CC Vector Long Range WiFi Repeater System for one of their newest packages designed around off the grid living or situations where power is not easily accessible.

I became aware of totally biodegradable garbage bags. That makes so much sense in landfills instead of plasic bags that will take perhaps hundreds of years to dissipate. I hope they become a mainstream item soon.

The most environmentally friendly product I’ve ever used is a composting toilet on our 28 acre very very rural property. This has been the cleanest waste disposal method ever. Next project is solar water pumping system if we can afford it.
We’ve switched every light bulb on our property to LED and set up a 1500 gallon rain water catching system.

I’d have to go with biodegradable garbage bags. I was a Mess Deck Master at Arms aboard the Coral Sea and we generated a lot of garbage that had to be dumped over the fantail. These products would not be harmful to the large sharks and other organisms that follow ships.
I’ve used the Eton FR 250 emergency radio for years now – AM, FM & SW reception. All it lacks is a USB port for charging other items and the weather bands.
Since being “forced” off the grid 10 years ago , my ongoing needs for power have grown with solar (PV) panels , wind and propane generator as backup (propane stores indefinitely). The wind/solar even drives a heating element in my hot water heater , freezes my food and gives me light…..Who doesn’t love LED lighting ?!
Every radio or battery charger CCrane markets runs on my system !

I have a couple of small solar panels for charging batteries, cell phones, etc. and my largest one will run lamps, fans, radios/TVs, small appliances etc. Even if you can’t afford a very large whole house system, smaller portable systems still make a lot of sense.

In 1999 I moved into the Bush in Alaska. Energy was very expensive. I soon went to a small generator run certain things. My mental state was saved when I bought my first CC radio which gave me channels from anchorage. I then got a solar battery charger to run my radio without the gen. Then an invertor to run electrical items without the fuel driven generators. Second year I took the fuel use from 1000 gals to 300 gals. the inverter gave me the use of my video movies(mental Health) to 11 movies before recharge. Technology with solar has living in remote areas much more livable than ruffing it in Alaska. Good friend uses solar charged Bear wire to keep the big critters out. All in all, Solar is one of the answers.
