Most of gifts I gave to my father as a child. As the say,”it’s the thought that counts”.
When I was working at Marie Callender’s they let us buy the leftover pies at a huge discount so I bought a couple dozen and went took them around to all my friends family and Neighbors on Christmas Eve….. the guy who live directly behind me told me he had diabetes and probably shouldn’t but went ahead and took it anyway….. the next day he got hauled off by ambulance to the hospital has he swears might I had nothing to do with it that he only had a little bit but I’ve always felt bad and wondered ever since… he was back out the next day
I bought remote controlled cars for several of the boys and rechargeable batteries thinking they were already charged, NOT. Nothing open on Christmas Day back then, I felt terrible.
I can’t think of any great failures
As children in the 1960’s, we would buy my Dad boxes of pricey cigars. If only we would have known the true price – Dad’s long painful death from emphysema.
My biggest gift failure was having a gift sent to my very dear sister, and it never arrived… It was heartbreaking for me, because she was very unwell, and I knew she would not be here much longer.
I mistakenly ( that was my best excuse) gave my new daughter in law a vacuum cleaner the first year they were married. Went over badly…..very very very badly….I never considered the message it might be sending her….GIFT FAIL….big time
Wool sweater to someone allergic to wool!
The works on any TV video Duck game a few years ago.
I once gave one of my kids, when they were little, a toy that broke coming out of the box.
It was two days of tears before I could exchange it.
Bose headphones (if you can believe that!)
I must surround myself with really gracious people because I can’t remember any big present failures…
i forgot them!
Back in the 80’s I spent many hours with a tandy 1000 and a dot matrix printer making custom calendars for my family. I finally got it done but they were rather primitive and plain compared to ones you could buy. Needless to say they were a “flop”.
Well, i gave meat to a vegan 🙁
I truly believe that it is just the state of your heart when you give a gift that is what is important, and not the gift itself. In saying that, I would have to say I have never given any failures.
Many Christmas’ ago, I gave a bottle of my favorite perfume to a girl. The month after, I found out from her mother that it’s the only brand of perfume she was allergic to.
Not long after that I got dumped.
Ces la vie !
Floppy bookmarks that I made for family when I was 6. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t use them!
I tried making a lamp for my brother and sister in law. I thought it looked great. Unfortunatel it fell apart when they tried to take it out of the box. Just little embarrassing!”
Have trouble buying for secret Santa’s . Family usually I’m make good choices . My mom liked my gifts but my brother is different ,he’s a down’s syndrome and my mom and I have tried to get him any thing Disney and especially Mickey mouse . He likes his clock radio and listens to it all day .We got him a new clock radio . Stereo CD player model but he likes his old one better . We used the new one in the summer camping now . Stick to cloths and Disney stuff . lol
Gift certificate for guitar lessons for my wife, 5 years later and it has still never been used!
My biggest gift failure was a set of fancy pens to write in cursive and some of the pens didn’t work since the ink had dried up.
I worked all day in the kitchen making Christmas stollen (German Christmas bread with dried fruit and nuts). That night I brought a loaf to the host of a neighborhood Christmas party and she was a celiac, so she could not eat gluten! Fortunately, the guests could partake!
Sent very nice clock radio’s to everyone on my husbands side of the family for xmas & everyone loved them. Except, his nephew and his wife who are both deaf. They are computer programmers, very smart& never said a word, but my gift was a complete fail. Felt so bad, now I make sure I consult with my husband on any drawbacks to my gift giving.
I must be blocking my memories of giving someone a bad gift… either that, or my friends and family have just been too gracious to let me know.
I don’t know if I ever gave a “failure” gift. I got my wife a vacuum cleaner for our first Christmas and she loved it and used it for many years. She also gave me shovels, rakes & wheelbarrows as gifts and I really appreciated them. We’re just practical ol’ country folks.
Thanks to address label mix up I once ended up sending a walking cane to my fit and fine mother in law and an Estee Lauder makeup palette to my Nana.
I once sent a Christmas gift of home made cookies to my cousin who was not going to join us for holidays. I thought I packed them well but all she literally got was crumbs!
This was right after I got engaged- I bought a very expensive corduroy jacket as a gift for my fiance’s Dad. Guess I shouldn’t have assumed his Dad would be of similar proportions as him! I had got him 2 sizes too big.
Yup did that…..gifted wine to my hosts without checking that they were recovering alcoholics
Mixed up and gave a men’s cologne to my best friend’s Mom
I bought my wife a cc radio plus a few years back, well obviously it was really for me when she said, you bought yourself a radio! 🙂
My biggest gift failure was giving my wife a clothes iron :-0
I am happy to say I don’t recall a fail. Not everyone was the greatest received. But I don’t recall an epic fail.
Running out of time before Christmas and buying a used book for my sweetheart at the time. It did not go over so well!
Biggest failure gift giving is when I gave same gift to someone, they gave me the same gift. I felt they thought I reaped and gave it back to them. Made me feel small.
I GAVE MY DAD A SNOW SHOVEL.
I once sent out an unsweetened batch of cookies to my sister. It was my niece who let me know but my sis was too kind to not even mention it as I had just begun baking
I gave my parents a portable phone back when that was a big thing. They didn’t use it. But they finally came around and liked it!
Last year I gave my daughter an expensive pink sweater of a brand that she loves, but after never wearing it, she gave it back to me. I gave it to the local thrift store. A great find for someone shopping the thrift store! It still had the tags on it!
One year I gave Lego figures that resembled the person I was giving the gift to. I gave them to each of the members of my family. They didn’t appreciate what great gifts those was! Go figure!
Many years ago I gave my parents a dog that they hated. They ended up giving it to someone else. Never try to buy someone a pet.
biggest gift failure you ever gave someone? A coffee maker – when it turned out the recipient already had one that was similar.
Biggest failure = No gift for my wife’s first Mother’s Day. Boy, that was a mistake!
Oh I blundered once and sent a premium prime ribs package to my Boss without knowing that he was a vegetarian 😐
Oops- I shipped wine to an old friend who was now trying to quit. His wife wasn’t impressed to say the least
Once my husband mislabeled the outgoing gifts and there was a hilarious mixup! We gifted Cuban cigars to non smokers.
Last year my friend sent me a men’s after shave! Knowing how haphazardly she works Iknew it was a mix up. Wonder who got the polka dot umbrella she had wanted to send me LOL
I can never forget this one time when I gifted a used-up Macy’s gift card to a colleague on her farewell party. It wasn’t until 6 months later that I realized it. I have always felt bad about this.
Yes I regifted a package without opening up the wrapping as it had such a pretty ribbon bow. I should’ve because it turned out to be a set of 2 bottles of Meelot and not 6 glass tumblers that I had assumed it to be. Quite embarrassing to take that for a friend who I knew was a recovering alcoholic
