If I had a show, I think I’d be on shortwave. I love the idea that your broadcast can be heard around the world with nothing but an inexpensive radio – technology that has been around for decades. I have this idea that I would like to broadcast all kinds of public domain music, as found on archive.org. Everything from old cylinder recordings and 78s to modern electronica.
I’ve done radio shows on both AM and FM, everything from talk to rock in my 35+ years in the business. I’d still like to do something on shortwave, though.
It is a shame how the big conglomerates have ruined traditional radio with pre-recorded and syndicated programming. Real radio should be immediate, and FUN to listen to.
I’m really tired of the mess that is AM and FM radio. It seems like only 5 companies own the dial and every station is a cookie-cutter copy of the others. That’s why I play with my shortwave radio so much. At least there are still a few stations that broadcast to the US in English from overseas. And there’s always the fun in hunting down the Pirate stations.
The formatted playlist the started on FM in the 1970’s has lead to the total limited variety of both AM and FM. I have a hard time finding any local flavor when DXing AM and now resort to mostly SW. And SW is limiting due to lack of a broad audience. Oh do I wish for the days of low watt independent local AM.
My radio show would be on AM so I could reach the widest possible audience. I would talk about things no one else ever talks about; like things not having to do with politics, religion, or money, After the widest possible audience sample my show, 99.99% will not tune in again, leaving an audience of .01% of the most interesting people in the world.

H’m. A show that would show up on shortwave and also on a local AM station; call it FACETS. Primarily about stories and discussions on odd bits of history and information that are generally unknown to the public; the trick is to keep it all interesting, lively and informative, and *not* dull. Alternatives in history, you name it.
No question about it. I’d have a 30’s and 40’s music station over shortwave radio. 🙂 I’m a bit of a nostalgic fellow and listening to period music over a traditional medium makes a perfect combination..

A radio is a simple device for people at large since long.The secret of it’s popularity being that it caters to their need for information amalgamated with entertainment.So a radio show that fits in this parameter is bound to catch their attention.
And when there is a choice, FM wins as a medium,because of shear quality of sound that it delivers,making listening the Radio a pleasant experience.
If I had a radio show, I’d focus it on gardening and the care of your yard. I do listen, on occasion, to the various gardening shows on the AM dial here in the Bay Area. They drive me insane!!! Half of the time they are speaking off the cuff, not knowing their plant material, the diseases and fungal issues which plague our plants. I can think of one person in particular who used to (don’t know if they still do radio, I can NOT listen) give advice which was a total sham. Got my blood boiling!! If I had the chance to do a radio show, that would be what I would focus on!
Well, an AM talk radio show would be my choice since SW is still a bit of a mystery to a lot of people including me. As far as my subject matter, I would focus on travel, amazing lesser known places and funny travel stories and places to see before you die.

I love Steve D’s idea. I agree that I’d like to be on shortwave, heard throughout the hemisphere. I’d have a station like 1690 WMLB with eclectic music and some interesting talk.
The problem with shortwave is no one listens anymore unless you are a “prophet”. Night time AM would be where I would want.
If I had a show .it would be about modern electronics/nobody knows all about
there phones/tv/or x box etc.
Since I’ve done AM and FM over my 42-year broadcast career, I think it would be fun to do a shortwave program, and I’d choose the subject of words as content for the show.

AM would be the route. I still remember the big stations, WLS, WLAC at night. Dick Biondi and John R. I guess I’m showing my age, uh?
Those are the only two stations I listened to every night here in eastern Kentucky in my teens. Thanks for the nostalgic reminder.
